We are the Appalachian Botanical Alliance (ABA). Our mission is to provide a consistent, high quality supply of Appalachian grown herbs and to encourage the economic livelihood of cooperative members.
The cooperative began in January 2012, with 6 members from 3 different counties in Western North Carolina: Madison County, Buncombe County, and McDowell (Rutherfordton). The members applied for a grant for $8,000 which we received through WNC AgOptions. The initial workings of the cooperative began through Dr. Jeanine Davis’s alternative crops program and meetings coordinated by the Alternative Agriculture group in 2009, which brought together educators, growers, herbalists, acupuncturist, and students to explore the possibility of growing Chinese Medicinal herbs in Western NC.
